On 22 Aug 24, SEMS hosted a Coffee Appreciation Workshop that turned out to be a delightful and aromatic adventure! Held at Highlander Coffee, the event brought together coffee enthusiasts of all levels to explore the world of specialty coffee.

Participants were introduced to the various types of coffee beans including the most popular varieties – Arabica and Robusta. Arabica, the most popular variety, is known for its smooth, mild flavour and vibrant acidity, often with fruity or floral notes. Robusta beans, higher in caffeine and easier to cultivate, deliver a bold, bitter taste with earthy undertones, making them ideal for strong espresso blends.

We also learn that local coffee has butter and corn and Vietnamese coffee contains fish roe! Apart from these nuggets of information, participants also discovered how small adjustments in grind size, water temperature, and brewing time can dramatically transform the flavour profile of their coffee.
The grand finale of the programme was the hands on latte art session which had everyone channeling their inner barista. Under expert guidance, participants created beautiful pieces of artwork which then concluded this interesting coffee appreciation workshop.
