In the glittering heart of Singapore, Singapore’s Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMS) recently celebrated a significant milestone – it’s 30th Anniversary. This momentous occasion was commemorated with a hosted dinner for all of our members; blending nostalgia with the promising future ahead. The event not only commemorated three decades of success and effort by our founders but also provided a platform for reflection, appreciation, and new comradery and connections.
Held at a newly minted private dining room at Atout at Dempsey Hill, members had the opportunity to wind down after a busy day at work, catch up with old and new friends; something we’ve all desperately missed during COVID. The dinner started with a welcome address by our very own President Dr Lim Hoon Chin:
“Ladies and Gentlemen, Esteemed members of SEMS, Distinguished guests,
Today is a momentous day, a day of celebration, reflection, and gratitude – as we gather here to mark the 30th anniversary of SEMS. It is a significant milestone in our journey to continually improve the emergency care of the acutely ill and injured patient.
For three decades, SEMS has been at the forefront of promoting excellence and development of emergency medicine and services both locally and globally. This remarkable society has not only fostered collaborations among its members and partners but has also consistently pushed the boundaries of education, research, and quality in the field of emergency medicine. The society has done so through partnership with local authorities and groups such as MOH, SCDF, SAF, AMS, ENC, AMCs, and internationally with IFEM, ASEM, and many other organizations which are too numerous to list.
As we stand here today, we are reminded of the countless hours, dedication, and unwavering commitment of our members (you!) and our supporters. Your passion, expertise, and tireless efforts have made SEMS an invaluable part of Singapore’s healthcare system. Your contributions have saved lives, transformed the practice of EM, and brought hope in times of crisis like the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
On this joyous occasion, it is crucial that we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all past and present leaders, ex-officio and KAHs, our members, partners and friends. Your support has been instrumental in our journey thus far. Your belief in our mission have allowed SEMS to flourish and make a positive impact on our society.
As we look forward to the future, let us remember that SEMS is not just an organization but a collective of dedicated individuals with a shared vision. We need to reaffirm our commitment to the improvement of emergency medicine both locally and worldwide.
In closing, let us celebrate the 30th anniversary of SEMS with the recognition that our journey has also just begun.
Together, as we chat over dinner and build closer ties to the person seated next to you or across you, it is my hope that we shall look forward to a future where “Singapore EM” is viewed upon with even greater admiration and trust, whenever and wherever it is mentioned. Thank you.”
A speech by Dr Venkataraman Anantharaman, better known as the “father of Emergency Medicine in Singapore” who founded the Society in 1993 brought on nostalgia reminiscing the years and history since its inauguration, and acknowledging the successes and its growth.
The event fostered an environment of fellowship allowing members from various hospitals to meet and connect, strengthening old bonds whilst building new friendships, all while enjoying delicious food and wine.
The event represented a celebration of achievements, a tribute to those who made it possible, and a promise for exciting opportunities in the horizon. The event not only marked 30 years of excellence but also an exciting stage for the next chapter in the remarkable journey that is Singapore’s Society of Emergency Medicine.
